Extraknown is a design collective of equals, long time collaborators, and friends, whose propped up layers of middle managers and executives for years at the world's most well known design agencies.

Dues paid, we've decided to build something far more equitable, ethical, and honest. We're doing this because we love making beautifully crafted designs, and because we believe each of us bears a responsibility to create things people will genuinely love and welcome into their homes and pockets without fear of exploitation.

No room for such things in the industry? That's fine, we'll make room.

CARLOS MATIAS JOINS TO LEAD BRAND & VISUAL DESIGN

Carlos has worked with some of the world’s most influential brands such as Nike, Converse, Beats by Dre, The Palms Resort in Las Vegas, Marc Jacobs, NBC, and lately Lululemon.

His work has been recognised by Cannes, D&AD, Design Week Awards and 60+ international AD awards.

The adage "cheap, fast, or good: you can only pick two" should be familiar to most buyers. Historically big agencies try to convince you they're all "fast and good" and the high price is unavoidable. But we found ways to deliver all three:

  • 1: Leads interface directly with clients, no CS gobetween
  • 2: Modern PM tools keep our project manager headcount lower
  • 3: No charging "tracer hours" for execs and randoms
  • 4: Who you speak to is who works on your account, no bait n switch

WHEN HIRING A DESIGN TEAM HOW MANY ACTUAL DESIGNERS & RESEARCHERS ARE YOU GETTING?

Have you ever sat on a design call and thought, "there's a lot of voices here but how big is the actual team of designers on this project?" Sadly, as small efficient indie studios were consumed by holding companies and global consultants trying to in-house great design, design projects became a hotbed for middle managers and actually fairly hostile to the best talent agencies claim to attract.

The problem, like a lot of things, is infinite scale. At some point you run out of LeBron and Giannis but all the rookies need a heavy hand. Sadly, all that middle management adds up and it doesn't improve the work. Have you ever project-managed or had an account manager talk their way into a Cannes Lion? Us neither.

THE BIG NAMES

Global agencies rely on super senior designers' work to impress clients and close deals, only to swap them out for far less senior staff who require (at least in Management's mind) heavy oversight and layers of middle managers.

EXTRAKNOWN

Everyone in our collective is super senior, with extensive experience dealing directly with clients and stakeholers, so we index heavily on Doers and Makers and not management.
